Ed Freeman was born and raised in Boston, the son of MIT professors, and majored in French and Russian at Oberlin College in Ohio. After college, he worked as a performing musician, arranger and record producer, crafting dozens of pop and jazz records, including Carly Simon's debut album and Don McLean's American Pie.

Moving to California in 1977, he gravitated towards film scoring, computer music, consulting and teaching. In 1989, he set up a portrait studio in downtown Los Angeles and began a gradual transition to working full time as a photographer.

In addition to his commercial work,  his fine art photography has been featured in scores of magazines and in over a dozen books published in this country, Europe, Australia and Japan. Los Angeles Times Books released a collection of his computer-enhanced images of abandoned buildings in the southern California desert entitled Desert Realty — the first time the newspaper had ever ventured into fine art publishing. That book was re-issued by Chronicle Books in the spring of 2007.

Freeman travels extensively, shooting stock for Getty Images and teaches Photoshop at Santa Monica College. He is working on a series of heavily processed, near-abstract portraits and nudes (shown here), a book of surfing pictures, another book of underwater nudes and a follow-up to Desert Realty entitled Urban Realty.
